Your business needs marketing
It just doesn’t need another full-time employee.

A lot of established businesses reach this point.

There’s plenty that needs doing, but not enough marketing work to employ someone full-time. So it gets shared around, squeezed between other jobs or handed to different contractors.

Marketing happens. Just not consistently.

An outsourced marketing manager gives it to one person to own.

  • Practical, experienced marketing support.
  • Strategy and implementation.
  • Consistent marketing activity.
  • More time to focus on running your business.

No full-time employee required.

What does an outsourced marketing manager do?

An outsourced marketing manager, sometimes called a fractional or contract marketing manager, is an experienced marketer who works with your business on an ongoing basis without being a full-time employee.

As your marketing manager, I take responsibility for planning, coordinating and keeping your marketing moving, while working directly with you as part of the business. .

I’ve worked across marketing and design throughout my career, so I can handle both the strategy and the practical work.

"Terri has provided design and graphic solutions to us for many years and has always delivered on time and in budget. She has a keen eye for detail, which is critical for technical nature of our business. I recommend Terri without reservation."

Benefits of working with an outsourced marketing manager

  • Marketing that helps the business grow, when the right marketing happens consistently, you’re in a stronger position to stay visible, generate opportunities and turn more of that activity into profitable work.
  • A clear marketing plan and priorities,  so you know what needs doing first and stop wasting time on disconnected marketing ideas.
  • One person keeping the website, content, email and brand moving together, so your marketing feels joined up and supports the same business goals.
  • Less time spent chasing contractors and unfinished jobs, so fewer marketing tasks come back to you to organise, follow up or rescue.
  • Experienced marketing input without hiring a full-time employee, so you get the level of support your business needs without creating a role you can’t yet justify.
  • Practical implementation as well as strategy, so the plan doesn’t sit in a document waiting for someone else to make it happen.
  • Someone who already understands the business when the next job comes up, so you spend less time briefing people from scratch and can get work moving faster.
  • More time to focus on running the business, because marketing is no longer another thing you have to keep carrying in your head.

Terri also co-ordinates and produces content for our media streams, which provides us with a professional profile and assists with the further reach of awareness of our Association. This in turn increases our overall Membership. The WMAI would highly recommend Terri to anyone seeking the talents of a professional, engaged and forward thinking individual."

Who I work with

I primarily work with established New Zealand SMEs that are big enough to need regular marketing support, but don’t need their own full-time marketing manager.

Often there are plenty of people in the business. There just isn’t anyone whose job is marketing.

That includes businesses in:

  • manufacturing and engineering.
  • construction and professional trades.
  • civil, structural and land surveying.
  • trade businesses.
  • multi-location health businesses such as veterinary and physiotherapy practices.
  • businesses working within brand guidelines set by an overseas head office.

What the first 90 days of working with an outsourced marketing manager look like

I don’t arrive with a standard marketing plan and start changing things for the sake of it.

First, I get to know your business and understand what’s already happening.

We look at what’s working, what isn’t, where the gaps are and what needs attention first. Then we set priorities and start working through them in a sensible order.

The first few months are about getting clear, getting organised and creating a consistent way of working together.

Is an outsourced marketing manager right for your business?

Probably, if:

  • Marketing keeps falling to the bottom of the list.
  • Nobody has clear responsibility for it.
  • You’ve outgrown doing things ad hoc.
  • Several people or contractors are involved but nobody is coordinating them.
  • You need experienced marketing thinking as well as practical delivery.
  • You want ongoing support without employing someone full-time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do businesses ask about outsourced marketing management?

Why outsource marketing instead of hiring a marketing manager?

If there is enough work for a dedicated marketing employee, hiring someone in-house may be the right choice.

But many SMEs need experienced marketing support before they need another full-time person.

Outsourcing gives you ongoing marketing management without adding a full-time salary and role to the business.

What is the difference between an outsourced marketing manager and a marketing agency?

A marketing agency usually provides a team to deliver particular services, campaigns or projects.

I work differently.

I work directly with you as your external marketing manager, keeping an eye on the wider picture and taking responsibility for keeping the different parts of your marketing connected.

There are no account managers between you and the person doing the work.

Do you do the marketing work yourself?

A lot of it, yes.

My background includes marketing strategy, graphic design, websites, email marketing, content and practical marketing implementation.

If a project needs specialist expertise outside what I do, I’ll tell you. I can work with the right supplier while keeping the overall marketing direction joined up.

Will I still need to be involved?

Yes, particularly at the beginning.

You know your business, customers and industry better than anyone. I need that knowledge to understand what your marketing needs to do.

Once I’m up to speed, the aim is to take more of the day-to-day marketing management off your plate.

What kinds of businesses do you work with?

I mainly work with established New Zealand SMEs in manufacturing, engineering, construction, professional trades and service businesses.

They’re usually businesses with a team already in place but no dedicated marketing person – or businesses that have been managing marketing through a mixture of staff and contractors.
